Plug-in solar has finally arrived in Great Britain. Since 27 August 2026, compliant systems can be connected through a suitable standard mains socket, giving renters, flat owners and households without a conventional rooftop array a much cheaper route into home solar.
The interesting bit is that this is no longer just a future technology. Kits are already appearing at mainstream UK retailers, with prices starting at under £500 in some listings. But this is a brand-new market, so choosing a kit on price alone is not a great idea.

The important number isn’t necessarily the panel wattage
You may notice kits advertised with 900W, 1,030W or even 1,260W of solar panels. That does not mean they are feeding that much power into your house. The current Great Britain plug-in-solar route is built around systems with output limited to 800W.
Oversizing the panels can still make sense. More panel capacity can help an 800W microinverter produce useful power for longer during imperfect weather, mornings and evenings. Think of the panel rating as the amount of solar collection available, while the inverter determines the maximum AC output into the home.
How much could plug-in solar actually save?
The UK government says a compliant plug-in solar system can provide up to around 20% of an average home’s electricity use and estimates potential savings of up to £110 per year. Treat that as an upper-end illustration rather than a guaranteed saving.
Your result depends heavily on orientation, shade, panel size, electricity price and — crucially — whether you can actually use the electricity while the panels are producing it.
If you already have a fairly constant daytime load from things such as a fridge, router, home office, pumps or smart-home equipment, your self-consumption may be better than a home that is almost empty all day.
Don’t buy one until you’ve checked this
- Compliance: buy a complete product intended for the new Great Britain plug-in-solar route, rather than assembling something simply because the connectors fit.
- ENA listing: check the relevant equipment/product status on the Energy Networks Association register.
- Your electrics: older or questionable wiring deserves professional inspection before connecting generation equipment.
- The socket: follow the manufacturer’s requirements exactly. Don’t improvise with extension leads or cable reels.
- Mounting: panels need to be safely secured and positioned where they won’t create a hazard.
- Permissions: renters, leaseholders and some properties may need landlord, freeholder, planning or listed-building consent.
Single panel or two panels?
A small single-panel system is probably the most interesting starting point if space is tight, your daytime electricity use is low or you simply want a lower-cost way to test home solar.
A larger two-panel setup becomes more attractive when you have the space and a decent daytime base load. The extra panel capacity can also help keep generation higher when conditions aren’t perfect, even though the compliant system’s AC output remains limited.
Our take
Plug-in solar makes the most sense when you think of it as a way to shave your home’s daytime electricity demand rather than a miniature replacement for a full rooftop installation.
The arrival of mainstream retailers is good news, but we’d still choose on compliance, mounting, useful generation and support before chasing the highest panel wattage or the lowest headline price.
Before spending £400–£1,000, run the numbers
A cheap kit isn’t necessarily good value if your home can’t use much of its daytime generation. Equally, a modest system can make a surprising dent in grid use if it matches your normal base load well.
