Smart plugs all do the same basic job: they let you switch a mains-powered device on and off remotely. The confusing bit is how they connect. Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Matter are often talked about as if they are three versions of the same thing, but they are not.
Quick answer
- Choose Wi-Fi if you want a simple setup with only a few plugs and would rather not buy a separate hub.
- Choose Zigbee if you are building a larger smart home, especially around Home Assistant, and want mains-powered devices that can strengthen a Zigbee mesh.
- Choose Matter when easy cross-platform compatibility is important—but check whether the individual plug uses Wi-Fi or Thread underneath and whether it has the features you want.
Wi-Fi smart plugs: simple and familiar
A Wi-Fi smart plug connects to your home network rather than a separate Zigbee coordinator. For one or two plugs this can be the easiest route: install the manufacturer’s app, connect the plug and start using it.
Wi-Fi is particularly useful when you want a stand-alone device without committing to a bigger smart-home system. Many models also provide power and energy monitoring, although that is a product feature rather than something Wi-Fi itself guarantees.
The downside appears as a setup grows. Each plug is another networked device to manage, and some products rely heavily on the manufacturer’s cloud service. If local control matters to you, check that specifically before buying rather than assuming every Wi-Fi plug behaves the same way.
Zigbee smart plugs: great for a growing smart home
Zigbee works differently. You normally have one coordinator or hub, and your Zigbee devices form their own network around it. Many mains-powered Zigbee devices, including many smart plugs, act as routers in that mesh. That can improve coverage for nearby sensors and other Zigbee devices.
This is one reason Zigbee is such a useful fit for Home Assistant. Home Assistant’s ZHA integration can create a Zigbee network using a compatible coordinator, and Home Assistant specifically notes that mains-powered router devices help extend range and device capacity.
The trade-off is that you need the coordinator or a compatible hub in the first place. Also, don’t assume every Zigbee plug exposes exactly the same features: switching, power readings, energy totals and other sensors can vary by model and integration.
What Matter actually means
Matter is the odd one out in this comparison. It is an interoperability standard, not simply another radio technology competing with Wi-Fi and Zigbee.
Matter can run over technologies including Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread. Bluetooth Low Energy is also used during commissioning. So seeing the Matter logo on a smart plug does not, by itself, tell you how that plug connects to your network.
The attraction is compatibility: Matter is designed to make compatible devices work across major smart-home ecosystems more consistently. But the Matter badge still does not guarantee that a particular plug includes energy monitoring, supports every feature in every platform, or uses Thread rather than Wi-Fi. Check the actual specification.
Matter and Zigbee are not the same network
A Zigbee device does not become a native Matter device simply because you have Matter elsewhere in the house. Matter can, however, support bridges that expose devices using technologies such as Zigbee into a Matter ecosystem. That distinction matters when you are planning hubs and coordinators.
Energy monitoring may matter more than the protocol
If your goal is reducing electricity use, energy monitoring can be more valuable than whether the plug says Wi-Fi, Zigbee or Matter on the box. A monitoring plug can show what an appliance is actually drawing rather than making you guess from its rated wattage.
Home Assistant can include individual devices in its Energy dashboard when suitable energy data is available. That makes monitoring plugs useful for things such as washing machines, office equipment, entertainment systems and identifying standby consumption.
Just remember that not every smart plug measures energy. Some only provide on/off switching, so check for power (watts) and energy (kWh) reporting if those are important to you.
A smart plug that does more with EcoFlow STREAM
The EcoFlow × Shelly Smart Plug is particularly interesting if you already use, or are considering, an EcoFlow STREAM system. On its own it provides real-time energy tracking, remote control, schedules and timers. When paired with a compatible STREAM system, EcoFlow can use the plug’s appliance-consumption data to help adjust the system’s charge and discharge strategy and allocate energy more accurately.
There is an important limitation: EcoFlow currently lists this integration for the STREAM Series Solar Plant. It is not a magic whole-house export controller on its own. EcoFlow recommends a compatible smart meter when whole-home measurement is required.
Why we like it: it combines ordinary smart-plug control with useful energy monitoring, while adding extra value for a compatible EcoFlow setup. If you do not own EcoFlow STREAM, a cheaper conventional monitoring plug may make more sense.

Which would we choose?
- A couple of simple plugs: Wi-Fi is often the least complicated option.
- A larger Home Assistant setup: Zigbee is often the tidier long-term choice, particularly when strategically placed mains-powered devices help build a strong mesh.
- A mixed Apple, Google, Alexa or other Matter-compatible household: Matter is attractive for interoperability, but choose the individual product on its actual features.
- Energy saving: prioritise reliable energy monitoring and usable data rather than choosing purely by protocol.
What to check before buying a UK smart plug
- Maximum load/current: make sure the plug is rated for the appliance you intend to connect.
- Energy monitoring: check whether it reports instantaneous power, accumulated energy, or both.
- Hub requirements: Zigbee normally needs a coordinator or compatible hub; Thread-based Matter devices need the appropriate Thread infrastructure.
- Local control: particularly important if you use Home Assistant or want automations to keep working when an internet service is unavailable.
- Platform compatibility: check the exact ecosystems and integrations supported by that model.
- Software support: look for a reputable manufacturer that provides security and firmware updates.
- UK suitability: buy a proper UK product from a reputable retailer or manufacturer rather than relying on questionable adaptors or unverified imports.
A quick safety note
A smart plug is still carrying mains electricity. Follow the manufacturer’s load limits and instructions, and stop using a plug or socket if you notice overheating, burn marks, buzzing, crackling or other signs of a fault. Electrical Safety First recommends buying smart devices from reputable retailers or manufacturers and checking that they are suitable for the rest of your smart-home setup.
The bottom line
There isn’t one protocol that wins for everybody. Wi-Fi is wonderfully simple for a small setup. Zigbee becomes increasingly attractive as the number of devices grows. Matter tackles a different problem—making compatible products and ecosystems work together more easily.
